2% sodium hypochlorite aqueous solution. Solutions of sodium hypochlorite, commonly known as bleach, are usually obtained from the reaction of chlorine gas and sodium hydroxide. The pH of the final product is maintained at over 11 by an excess of unreacted sodium hydroxide (between 0.5 and 1.5% by weight). The solution also contains between 0.5 and 1.5% sodium chloride as a byproduct of the reaction. Maintaining an alkaline pH is essential to the stabilization of the solution, because at low pH chlorine returns to its gaseous state and emerges from the solution. Solutions to 12% are usually reserved for industrial applications, while solutions of 4% and 6% are used more in the home.
